Britain is on course for a full‑blown 1970s‑style economic meltdown unless the welfare system is ripped up and rebuilt, Robert Jenrick has warned.
Reform UK’s treasury spokesman claimed Labour must slash the spiralling benefits bill before the financial markets “force reforms upon us” and plunge the country into crisis.
His comments come days after he unveiled a bombshell £50 billion‑a‑year savings plan that would see major benefits scrapped, including Personal Independence Payments and the health element of Universal Credit for working‑age adults. Under the proposals, nearly 2.9 million people would see their payments cut or removed entirely.
Speaking to the When the Facts Change channel, Jenrick issued a dramatic warning: “If we don’t do these welfare reforms, there’s a very high chance we’ll end up in a fiscal crisis, with the bond markets taking fright.”
